Youth workshops return to Alix Art Gallery

Only a few spots were still available for a series of youth art workshops at the Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery.

The Try New Things Summer Splash Workshops feature four activities and four artists between August 2 and 5.

Art Gallery Education Coordinator Rose Canino said interest has been high this year.

"So there were 15 spots available each day.  We only have a few spots for the Wednesday workshop, which is the Fiber Selfies with Patricia Cook, and only a few spots as well, I believe, with the workshop on the Thursday, August 4 -- it's called Part of the Big Picture with Daisy Fresh."

Canino said the gallery has been hosting the free program for about 10 years now.  She said they're excited to be back to in-person workshops following a two-year hiatus.

"We focused on virtual and at-home engagement during the pandemic, so this is our first summer since 2019 hosting these in-person workshops," said Canino.  "The goal of the workshops is to introduce youth to new art techniques and materials, make new friends, explore their community and develop their creative skills."

Canino said the initiative has been popular since it was introduced and that most of the participants have an interest in art.

"And a lot of them have actually come back in volunteer roles or some of our past participants in these workshops have actually become instructors in the future."

Workshops that have already filled up include Zine Machine with Lauren Davidson on August 2 and Photography Fun with Sierra Rei Hart on August 5.
