Naked Sarnia beachgoer charged with assault

A Sarnia man lying naked at Canatara Beach is accused of assault and yelling racial slurs at a group of beachgoers.

City police were called to an alleged disturbance at the beach at around 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Police said the 49-year-old man spotted the group and became physically aggressive towards them, telling them to go back to their own country. The accused also tried to grab at a member of the group during a short chase.

Police said the suspects behavior escalated after being asked to leave them alone. It's alleged he began to shove and punch the victims after he realized he was being recorded.

When police arrived on scene, the accused continued to be belligerent towards the group and the officers. He was taken into custody where he refused to follow police instructions and at times attempted spitting at the officers.

The suspect is charged with four counts of assault, causing a disturbance, mischief, nudity and two counts of uttering threats. He has been released from police custody and has a court date set for next month.
