Ontario coroner's office investigating death at Sarnia Jail

The death of an inmate at the Sarnia Jail is under investigation.

Correctional staff found the male inmate in medical distress and Lambton EMS was called immediately.

In an email to Sarnia News Today, the Ministry of the Solicitor General confirmed an inmate died in hospital on Monday, September 5.

"The ministry takes deaths in custody very seriously and investigations are carried out by ministry officials, the Office of the Chief Coroner and the police," said Media Relations Spokesperson Andrew Morrison.

The ministry said the Office of the Chief Coroner is investigating to determine the cause and manner of death.

If it is determined the death was not due to natural causes, a mandatory inquest will be conducted.

Further details about the inmate were not immediately available, including his name and age.
