The Sarnia Police Service has issued a warning to city residents about the fatal consequences that often come with using fentanyl.
According to police, officers responded to two separate, suspected overdose deaths within five minutes of one another on Saturday, both of which happened at the hands of fentanyl. These were just the latest of several deaths related to the illicit drug within the last week.
“Members of the public are reminded that because Fentanyl is such a powerful opioid, the difference between a dose that will get you high and a dose that will kill you is miniscule," the statement said.
In light of fentanyl's prevalence within the city, Sarnia Police offered tips for those who come in contact with the drug.
In the event of a suspected overdose, officers say to call 911 immediately. They suggest that attempts to "sober up" like cold showers and long walks are ineffective, and that getting medical attention as soon as possible might prevent death or brain damage.
In the spirit of harm reduction, those who may use fentanyl are advised to remain in places where help is within reach, and to have a naloxone kit on hand.
