Local fundraiser celebrates Ukrainian culture and traditions

A local event celebrating Ukrainian culture is raising money to help the country and its residents.

The Pysanky and Perogy Fundraiser features lessons on the art of making Ukrainian Easter Eggs, and delicious perogies.

Organizer Dr. Cassandra Taylor said money raised will help support Ukrainian residents forced from their homes, fleeing the Russian aggression.

"Our goal essentially is to raise as much money we can in donations, but also to raise awareness within the local community about Ukraine heritage," said Taylor. "As well as down the road if we're able to get refugees from Ukraine, and immigrants, to be able to come here and support them here."

The event is set for Saturday, April 2 at St. George's Ukrainian Catholic Church. Those wishing to participate must register in advance.

"Book to come with your families, kids as well as adults to learn how to do the pysanky classes and we will have perogy there to sell," said Taylor.

The Rosedale Avenue church is also accepting donations for the Ukrainian Canadian Congress to send care packages of food, medicine, and other supplies to Ukraine.
