Bluewater Power customers are being warned of a telephone scam making the rounds in Sarnia-Lambton.
The scammers are threatening to disconnect service unless a payment is made.
CEO Janice McMichael-Dennis said the fraudsters sound very convincing.
"The criminals have upped their game this time," said McMichael-Dennis. "They're actually using the recording of our pre-recorded message here at Bluewater Power. Sometimes when you answer it may come up as Bluewater Power, or a 1-800 number. The bottom line is, they're demanding immediate payment over the phone via credit card or banking information."
McMichael-Dennis said it's important to note that Bluewater Power already has your account information, and will never ask for payment over the phone or via gift card or Bitcoin.
She said the utility also doesn't use a 1-800 number.
"We'd hate to see anyone fall victim to this fraud activity, it's horrible. Please be vigilant and never try to pay your hydro bill over the phone."
Those who receive a suspicious call are asked to contact Bluewater Power at 519-337-8201 to ensure you are speaking to them directly.
