A candlelight vigil will be held in Sarnia on Friday to mark one year since Russia invaded Ukraine.
Dr. Cassandra Taylor said the Save Ukraine Sarnia Lambton group is hosting the event with St George’s Ukrainian Church.
"It will be a solemn service, including what we call a panachyda, which is essentially a Ukrainian version of a funeral prayer for somebody who has passed away," said Taylor.
"The service will recognize and honour those people who have given their lives fighting for Ukraine, as well as, unfortunately, the innocent civilians. We will [also] be praying for those who have had to relocate and move."
Candles will be provided at the service. Snacks will also be served afterward for Sarnia-Lambton residents to socialize with recent newcomers.
Based on community support groups and area churches, Taylor said approximately 150 people have relocated to Sarnia-Lambton from Ukraine.
As someone who has regular contact with Ukrainians who are staying locally, Taylor said there has been a lot of reflection from where they were a year ago compared to now.
"Definitely an overall sad experience. These people have lost everything but they're doing well here," she said. "The community has been amazing to help support them."
Hundreds gathered during an outdoor vigil held last year, and Taylor said she hopes to see the same amount of support.
Friday's candlelight vigil will begin at 7 p.m. at St George’s Ukrainian Church, located on Rosedale Avenue near Murphy Road.
