CANstruction brings the 'big screen' to Lambton Mall

The Inn of the Good Shepherd is holding its annual CANstruction event this weekend.

Executive Director Myles Vanni said it's the event's 10th year at Lambton Mall, and this year's theme is 'Movies'.

"We're going to have lots of visitors, Superman is going to be there, Dorothy and the yellow brick road, Mater, lots of cool structures," said Vanni.

Vanni said 15 teams will spend the day Saturday building their structures out of canned goods and other non-perishable food items. Judging is scheduled for Sunday morning with awards handed out at 1 p.m. in the food court.

Voting for the People's Choice award will continue until March 21. The structure that raises the most money wins.

Vanni hopes the event will collect 45,000 pounds of food for the Inn.

"We use about 55,000 pounds a month, so that's not quite a month's supply, but to get all that in one event is amazing," he said. "But when you wander around and see all that food, to think that's not quite a month is pretty humbling."
