Wet weather wipes out canoe and kayak race

Significant rainfall expected over the next three days has forced the cancellation of the 2023 Sydenham River Canoe and Kayak Race.

The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority (SCRCA) and St. Clair Region Conservation Foundation (SCRCF) said the decision to cancel the event scheduled for Sunday, April 30, was made on Wednesday afternoon after staff reviewed the forecast leading up to the event.

"Due to the amount and length of rainfall expected over the next three days, site conditions at both the start and finish lines are not expected to be usable on Sunday for the race," said Manager of Communications at the Authority Donna Blue. "We felt it was best to make the call now to cancel the race in order to notify participants and those who planned to attend."

Those who have pre-registered for the event will receive a full refund.

The race is organized annually as a fundraiser to support SCRCA conservation education and programs and in the past attracted up to 100 participants.
