The Red-Headed Woodpecker has been named the official city bird of Sarnia.
Mayor Mike Bradley made the announcement Sunday during the World Migratory Bird Day celebration at Canatara Park, where visitors have been known to catch a glimpse of the Red-Headed Woodpecker in the oak trees.
"Known for its striking pattern of a crimson head, snow-white body, and half white, half inky black wings, the Red-Headed Woodpecker is a unique and beautiful species that stands out from other woodpeckers," said a statement from the Sarnia Bird Team. "Not only is it an adept insect-catcher, but it also loves to feast on acorns and beech nuts, often storing them in tree crevices for later consumption."
The population of Red-Headed Woodpeckers has seen a decline as the species suffered from habitat loss and changes in its food supply over the last few decades. Mayor Bradley believes honouring the Red-Headed Woodpecker in this way will raise awareness of environmental issues and the need to protect it as a species.
"The selection of the Red-Headed Woodpecker as Sarnia's official City Bird is a testament to the city's commitment to preserving and protecting its natural environment and biodiversity," the Sarnia Bird Team chimed in. "As we celebrate the selection of the Red-Headed Woodpecker as Sarnia's City Bird, let us also commit to preserving and protecting its natural habitat, so that this magnificent species can thrive once again."
The designation was made following a bird poll conducted by Bird Friendly Sarnia, in which members of the community voted for their favourite species.
