Local students represent at national, international science fairs

Students from Lambton County walked away with several awards from this year's Canada-Wide Science Fair.

The national event was held last week in Edmonton, Alberta.

Safia Deol won multiple awards for a project called "The IncrediGels: Multifaceted Biopolymers for Dental Procedures."

Some of the awards Deol won include the senior gold Excellence Award, the Health and Wellness Challenge Award, the Sanofi Biogenus Award, and the Youth Can Innovate Award.

Cynthia Rayson and Riley Edmunds each won silver awards in the junior category.

The three students were among five who qualified for the national science fair after the Lambton County Science Fair was held this spring.

The Canada-Wide Science Fair returned to an in-person format after being held online for three years.

In total, 220 students received more than $1.6 million in scholarships and awards.

Meanwhile, Sarnia students Krish Modi and Annabelle Rayson also competed last week in the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair in Dallas, Texas.

Rayson came in fourth place in the Earth and Environment Sciences category. She also won a special China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) award, given to projects that best reflect originality and innovation.
