A public discussion on affordable and supportive housing will be held Wednesday night.
The Rotary Club of Sarnia is screening the film "Safe" at the Sarnia Library Theatre in advance of a panel discussion.
Spokesperson Michael John Kooy said it was created by Hamilton-based filmmaker John Butler.
"The film showcases several supportive housing communities in southwestern Ontario run by a charitable organization called Indwell," said Kooy. "Through interviews with residents, support workers and builders/designers, the film explores a success story that’s giving people hope."
Kooy said it's free to attend, but those who are able are invited to make a donation to the Rotary’s Affordable Housing fund, which supports new housing initiatives in Sarnia-Lambton.
"We don't have an answer in our back pocket, but we do know that we want to act as catalysts bringing folks together to find a solution," he said. "We don't have a specific project in mind yet, so I don't want to make that commitment. But, we know that when the time for a project happens, there are upfront costs. There's costs of getting architect drawings, there's costs of getting land, there's the cost of getting planning permission and so on."
Kooy encourages anyone with land that may be appropriate for development to contact them.
"The door is open. We're looking for about an acre and a half within the City of Sarnia," Kooy said.
Lambton County Social Services Division General Manager Valerie Colasanti and Heather Martin with Wellington Ridge in Sarnia are part of the panel discussion following the film.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
The event runs from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
