Northern students receive Point Edward-based scholarship

Alaina Burns and Thomas Guthrie have been named recipients of the 2023 Maynard and Rene Walker Family Scholarship.

A presentation was held at Brand Hall (St. Paul’s Anglican Church) on June 23.

The graduating high school students will each receive $5,000 U.S. However, payments will be split between their first and second years of studies, provided they continue to meet the grades criteria.

Both of this year's recipients are graduating from Northern Collegiate Institute and Vocational School.

Burns has enrolled in a combined Masters program in Computer Science and Software Engineering at the University of Detroit Mercy, and Guthrie plans to specialize in Biomedical Engineering.

“My ultimate goal is to create new technologies that will improve the lives of individuals with disabilities and those suffering from various illnesses,” said Guthrie in his application.

The two students were thankful to receive financial assistance.

“The benefits of living in Point Edward and being surrounded by such kind and supportive community members has really assisted me in getting to where I am now,” said Burns.

The scholarship program was created in 2017, in honour of longtime Point Edward residents Maynard and Rene Walker. Since then, nine students have received scholarship funding.

"It’s wonderful to hear about the plans these young students have to continue their education and learn skills that they can use to help others in their future careers,” said Mary Ellen Walker, daughter of Maynard and Rene.

High school grades and contributions to the Village of Point Edward are highly considered during the application process. Applications are also edited to not include the applicant's name so as to avoid possible biases.
