Firefighters respond to garage fire, gas leaks

Sarnia firefighters had a busy day after being called out to a garage fire and two gas leaks on Thursday, all within a short time frame.

A garage fire on Cromwell Street was reported at 10:18 a.m.

Public Education Officer Mike Otis said the fire was related to a vehicle issue and was deemed accidental.

No injuries were reported.

The fire was quickly extinguished due to a quick response. A damage estimate was not immediately available but Otis said he's not expecting it to be substantial.

Around the same time, crews were called to a large gas leak on Edgewood Street (behind the Wiltshire Plaza) at 10:37 a.m. The south end of Wiltshire Drive was closed to traffic at Murphy Road for a couple of hours.

Otis said a few homes in the area were evacuated as a precaution.

The area was cleared at around 1:20 p.m.

It's believed the gas leak was caused by someone who was digging and cut a line.

A second gas leak was later reported in the city but Otis said it was much smaller.
