UPDATE: SIU charges Sarnia officer

A constable with the Sarnia Police Service (SPS) has been charged by Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) after a 35-year-old man suffered a serious injury during an arrest.

The SIU released its report on Thursday.

Cst. Sean Van Vlymen was charged with one count of assault causing bodily harm in connection to an incident last year.

Sarnia police were called to St. Paul’s Church on Devine Street on October 23, 2022 to investigate a report of trespassing. Few other details were provided.

Van Vlymen has a court date scheduled for August 3.

"Cst. Van Vlymen is not assigned to operational duties pending the outcome of this matter," read an SPS media release.

Police Chief Derek Davis said SPS is not able to provide any additional comments as it is an SIU matter and is now before the courts.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of police officers that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault, and a firearm being discharged at a person.
