Fill the Fleet aims to feed families

Two local charities are teaming up to help feed families this summer.

'Fill the Fleet' is on Saturday, July 22.

The Salvation Army's Krystal Thomson said vehicles from both the Salvation Army and St. Vincent De Paul will be at several grocery stores across the county collecting donations.

"So we have both Giant Tigers in Sarnia as well as Metro at the Northgate Plaza, and then we have vehicles in Corunna at No Frills and in Bright's Grove at Foodland," said Thomson.

She said they're seeing a lot of new faces asking for help.

"We are seeing an increase," said Thomson. "As  inflation is rising so is the need, so we are seeing new families accessing both food banks."

St. Vincent De Paul's Danica Craig said they're hoping to surpass last year's total of 150 boxes of food and $4,000.

She said they're in need of the everyday staples.

"Baby formula, juice boxes, cereal, pasta, pasta sauce, and hygiene products is also a big one," said Craig.

Donations of non-perishable food items can be dropped off between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
