Major fall turnaround at Shell

A major maintenance project is slated to begin this month at Shell's Sarnia Manufacturing Centre (SMC).

The company said work will focus on the chemical plant, which produces isopropyl alcohol.

The planned turnaround, slated to begin in mid-September, is the company's largest capital investment in the chemical plant to date.

Shell said the turnaround will allow for necessary repairs and upgrades to ensure the continued safe and reliable operation of the facility.

Area residents may notice increased flaring, noise and traffic while work is completed.

“We know there are impacts such as increased flaring when we shutdown units to complete these inspections and repairs,” said Shell Downstream Corporate Relations Lead Stephen Velthuizen in a media release. “We appreciate the patience of the community during this work as we invest in the facility to keep it running safely.”

About 250 contractors and employees will be a part of the turnaround.
