Man accused of swimming across river to steal weapon

A Sombra man is in hot water after allegedly swimming across the St. Clair River into Michigan and stealing a gun.

It's alleged he came ashore in East China Township and walked to the village of New Haven in Macomb County on Wednesday, September 6.

At about 2 p.m., the Macomb County Sheriff's Deputies were called to a pawn shop. It's alleged a 24-year-old male suspect stole a gun and ran.

Two schools in the area were placed on a soft lockdown while police searched for the suspect, whom deputies were able to arrest after a short pursuit.

The Macomb County Sheriff's Office told Sarnia News Today that the suspect was handed over to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Jeremy James Wallace is charged with improper entry by alien, possession of stolen firearm, and an alien in possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Wallace is scheduled to appear in Michigan court on September 22.

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
