Construction of another new apartment building in central Sarnia is proposed.
City council will consider approving official plan and rezoning bylaw amendments for the property at 927 Exmouth Street, on the southeast corner of the Exmouth Street and Indian Road intersection, on Monday.
Mayor Mike Bradley is encouraged by the proposal and other projects underway.
"It comes on the heels of the other announcement of another major development on the former Sarnia General Hospital site," he said. "This brings five storeys of two bedroom units, 30 in total. It also is on top of the fact that we've got in the city over 2,400 units approved and ready to go for all sorts of different housing."
Bradley noted a large residential development planned at the former movie theatre property on London Road, the recent opening of a new apartment on Afton Drive, and single family homes being built in the area.
"It's a good mixture to have as we move forward, in the next year or two, trying to create more housing in the community," he said. "I made a commitment, as the mayor to the province, that we in the next eight years would have over 1,000 units of all sorts in place. We are very much on track to do that, despite the challenges."
A boarded up house occupies the property at Exmouth and Indian now.

"It's been a vacant property for a long time and there is a cluster of units of the same type of apartments, townhouses, around there. This is all good. It helps bring up the number of units available for the public, it also intensifies where we're doing the development instead of sprawling into the greenfield. So, it's a good investment for the developer and in my view it's also a good investment for the city," Bradley said.
A parking lot with 30 spaces is proposed with a designated entrance and exit onto Exmouth Street.
The proposal will be discussed during a public meeting at 1 p.m. in council chambers.
