Theatre Sarnia opens its season with a cult classic.
The musical Little Shop of Horrors starts its seven show run at Sarnia's Imperial Theatre Friday night.
Devon Laird, who portrays Seymour Krelborn, said it's a dark comedic musical adaptation about a nerdy floral assistant who stumbles across a new breed of plant he names Audrey II.
"So it's about this quirky little plant guy who lives in the gutter of skid row," said Laird. "He comes across this mysterious plant from outer space and goes on an adventure with him, finding love, and figuring out what does life look like with this mysterious plant and thereafter."
Brent Wilkinson, who is marking his tenth year performing in Sarnia, is the voice of Audrey II, the talking plant.
He said he's been dreaming about playing the role since high school.
"This has been such a fascinating, interesting, cool beast to tackle to try and sort of connect with the puppeteers," said Wilkinson. "I actually talked to them and I said 'I felt what you were going to do, I was anticipating what you were going to do, and now we're actually starting to become one entity.' It is different. It's been a great challenge."
The musical, which was produced off-off Broadway in 1982, was based on a Roger Corman low budget film that was famously filmed in just two days.
Little Shop of Horrors runs from October 20-21 and October 25-28, with a matinee on October 22.
