Fire Marshal's Office investigating Sarnia apartment fire

One person was taken to hospital after a fire broke out Sunday afternoon in downtown Sarnia.

Sarnia Fire and Rescue responded to a 12 storey apartment building on Maxwell Street near Front Street at around 3:30 p.m.

Fire Prevention Officer Roel Bus said Lambton EMS transported one person requiring medical treatment to hospital.

"The fire was contained to one unit," said Bus. "The lone occupant of that unit was sent to hospital with smoke inhalation."

He said firefighters were on scene until the evening hours.

"It [the building] was evacuated initially because the alarms were going off and there was a fire within the building, but they were let back in before we left."

Bus said the Ontario Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of the fire, and a damage estimate was not immediately available.

Sarnia police also attended the scene.
