Mid-November completion eyed for new transit terminal

Good progress is being made on the construction of Sarnia's new transit terminal off Wellington Street in front of Clearwater Arena.

The project started over the summer and Construction Manager Rob Williams said crews have finished quite a bit of work.

"We have completed all of the underground work, we've done all the installation of granular and curbs, we're currently in the process of paving it," said Williams. " I would expect work to be complete there by about the middle of November."

Williams said crews will shift their focus to other finishes then.

"That work includes new benches, new garbage cans, new light poles, new bus shelters, and new planters," he said. "The bus shelters aren't expected until January. There's a significant delay on some of those specialty items, but I believe that we can get to a point where we can actually move transit in."

Williams said the construction has gone smoothly for the most part, but some delays were experienced.

"We had to replace the water main, which was going to be underneath the transit terminals. Once we started looking into it, there was a history of breaks on the water main and we thought it was prudent to change that out. So, that caused us a few weeks delay," he said.

Williams said they also had to work around the arena's schedule.

"Obviously, ice had to be made and the arena is continuing to operate. So, that caused some delays, but other than that... everything has gone pretty well," Williams said.

He said Sarnia Transit is already working on adjusting schedules so they're ready to go.

The nearly $3 million dollar project will replace the existing transfer terminal on Murphy road, but there will still be a stop at the Real Canadian Superstore.
