Sarnia Fire Rescue Services said crews were called to a two-storey structure at around 2:20 p.m. in the area of Elgin Street and Napier Street.
Officials said the small fire was easily extinguished. However, the cause remains undetermined at this time.
Most of the damage was limited to the contents of the basement.
People in southern Huron and Lambton counties are being told to limit their time outside.
