Hayter family honoured through memorial hockey tournament

Two well-known people, who left a lasting impression on the Brooke Alvinston community, will be honoured in true Canadian fashion this weekend.

The seventh annual Hayter Memorial hockey tournament will take place on Friday and Saturday at the Brooke Alvinston Inwood Community Complex.

Firefighters from nine departments will compete in the tournament, and the Watford Warwick department is looking to defend its 2022 victory.

Brooke Alvinston Fire Chief Ron McCabe said the tournament is in memory of Jim and Mary Louise Hayter.

He said the couple, who was very active in the community, passed away within two weeks of each other in 2017.

"We decided to honour them because of their great community involvement," said McCabe. "Jim was the Brooke Alvinston fire chief for 15 years as well as a 44 year member of the department. Mary Louise was very involved in the community on council and different things. She was also a big believer in the foodbank, which we will also be accepting donations toward this weekend for admission."

McCabe said proceeds raised benefit Camp Bucko.

He said they've raised $65,000 to date, and they hope to surpass the $80,000 mark this year.

"Camp Bucko is a camp for kids that have been involved in burn accidents," he said. "It gives them a chance to get together and just be kids for a week at camp. It's run by volunteers, including firefighters and different members of the fire community. I got to know about it when my mom was in the burn unit in London. I was in the waiting room and I was able to sit there and listen to the kids tell their stories about their surgeries and different things."

There will also be a 50/50 draw and a silent auction.

Items up for bid will include the use of the Sarnia Sting's community suite and 20 tickets.

The Toronto Fire Department has also offered up a trip on their fire boat.

Games will be at 7 p.m., 8 p.m., and 9:30 p.m. Friday night.

Action continues all day Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m.
