Council asked to support Bright's Grove Library Project on budget day

Sarnia council is being asked to "take a stand" in championing the Bright's Grove Library Project.

Committee spokesman Mark Moran asked that the project be advanced during 2024 budget deliberations.

"Your committee recommends that council move the Bright's Grove Library Project from unfunded, to funded, in the capital plan, begin allocating funds in the 2024 budget and commit to building it in 2025," said Moran.

He acknowledged a $100,000 donation, made by an individual in August, and said because of the boost fundraising could be well underway by the time construction begins.

"Once it's built, the Lambton County library division is ready to step in and furnish it, create programming and administer the site. The county would also work with the city to obtain grants and create partnerships with service groups and local agencies," he said.

Council decided in May 2022 to amend the 10 year capital plan to include the project and proceed with procurement of architectural drawings.

"Your approval now, would allow ample time to finish the site work, tend to the project and ensure that it gets done and gets done right," Moran said.

The project will create a community hub; with an expanded library, new community room, outdoor sitting area and accessibility improvements to Gallery in the Grove.

Sarnia council was presented the final building construction plans in September, revealing the project's preliminary $5.85 million cost.

The request made Monday will be considered during budget deliberations on December 5.
