Sting's annual Teddy Bear Toss supports thousands of local kids

Thousands of stuffed toys are set to hit the ice at Progressive Auto Sales Arena on Sunday afternoon.

It's the Sarnia Sting's annual Teddy Bear Toss game.

When the Sting score their first goal, fans will throw their donations onto the ice, which will support several local charities including the Salvation Army, Inn of the Good Shepherd, and Noelle's Gift.

The annual toy drive, co-sponsored by Finch Ford Lincoln, has generated just over 80,000 bears since its inception in 1998.

Dealership Managing Partner Mark Guy said they're looking forward to the event that's always a special one for the community.

They're hoping to collect at least 4,000 stuffed toys.

"This is one of our most exciting events of the year," said Guy. "It's always a lot of fun to see all the kids and the fans at the Sarnia Sting game waiting for that first goal to throw the teddies onto the ice. We've been getting prepared, we've got quite a few volunteers ready to help at the event itself. They'll be ready to take the bears off the ice and get them back to our showroom so we can count them all. We've got a great connection with PetSmart in town here too. They've donated a bunch of teddy bears as well so we've got half a showroom full already."

Guy said the community means everything to the Finch Auto Group, and they're thrilled to carry on the tradition.

"For us and the Sting to work together to provide an opportunity to get some of these teddy bears to children that may not otherwise have a normal Christmas, it's an amazing event on that side of things," he said. "We're thrilled to be a part of it."

Sting Vice President of Business Operations Jake Bourrie said the players are looking forward to the game just as much as the fans.

"It's a coveted goal," said Bourrie. "Everybody wants to send the bears flying and be a part of history. I'm looking forward to seeing who it is this year. We certainly have this game circled on the calendar. It's a beautiful opportunity to come together in celebration and to support our community."

Sasha Pastujov scored the Teddy Bear Toss goal in 2022, and other notable names to score the special goal include Nolan Burke, Sean Josling, Jamieson Rees, Steven Stamkos and Anthony DeAngelo.

Fans are also encouraged to bring a new toy to the game to be placed under the Christmas trees on the concourse.

Those who aren't able to attend the game can make a donation at Finch Ford Lincoln in Sarnia.

Sunday's game, against the Kitchener Rangers, kicks off at 2 p.m. at Progressive Auto Sales Arena.

You can hear all of the action live on 103.9FM and 1070AM CHOK.
