New roundabout opens in Sarnia

A new roundabout in Sarnia, near The Home Depot, has officially opened to traffic.

Construction Manager Robert Williams said pavement markings were completed late last week and that city was just waiting for specialty signs to be installed. The roundabout opened just before 12 p.m. on Wednesday.

Currently the roundabout links Quinn Drive and The Rapids Parkway (beside Pontiac Court) which leads to Exmouth Street.

The roundabout is part of the Rapids Parkway extension project. The final phase of the project is expected to take place in 2024, to connect the two sections of The Rapids Parkway under the Highway 402 overpass.

The roundabout was expected to open in late to mid November.

During the same time, crews were also working on a reconstruction project which temporarily shut down Exmouth Street between Lambton Mall Road and Pontiac Drive.

This latest phase of the parkway extension project was expected to cost $3.2 million.

Williams said there are still some payments to be made but they're expecting to come in under budget.
