Festive treat pays off for Lambton nutrition program

The inaugural Tim Hortons' Holiday Smile Cookie campaign has raised $39,213 to support local children through a nutrition program and summer camps.

A cheque presentation was held Thursday morning at a Tim Hortons location on London Road in Sarnia.

The local campaign, which ran in mid-November, included 11 stores in Sarnia and the Bright’s Grove location.

Proceeds raised will be evenly split ($19,606) between the Ontario Student Nutrition Program in Lambton and Tim Hortons Foundation Camps.

VON Community Development Coordinator Leslie Palimaka said they're so happy to see the community support through this holiday initiative.

"We were very grateful for any sort of support that could be provided and every penny makes a difference in student nutrition," she said.

Palimaka said the local student nutrition program supports 9,600 children at 46 schools by providing access to nourishing snacks.

Local Tim Hortons franchise owner David Hogen said he was not surprised by how well the campaign did.

"We're excited [about] the results," he said. "I think everyone loves the program and the fact that it was a holiday cookie just  brought it up much more."

In total, the holiday campaign raised $9.8 million across the country, supporting over 600 charities and community groups, including Tim Hortons Foundation Camps.
