Annual Home Improvement Lottery focuses on backyard upgrades

The clock is ticking to purchase tickets for the annual Home Improvement Lottery (backyard edition) in support of the Alzheimer Society of Sarnia-Lambton.

One lucky person will win a backyard makeover, valued at $50,000.

Manager of Fund Development and Communications Marie Marcy-Smids said after hosting two kitchen improvement lotteries, they wanted to try something different this time.

She said the backyard lottery has been very popular so far and only 5,000 tickets were printed.

The prize includes a consultation and design plan with local Landscaper and Architect John DeGroot. The design can include various components such as plants, outdoor lighting, a built-in BBQ, patio furniture, a brick firepit, et cetera.

Tickets can be purchased online, at a kiosk near Toys R Us at Lambton Mall, or at various local businesses including DeGroot's Nurseries.

One ticket can be purchased for $50 or two for $80.

Money raised through the lottery will support local programs and services.

"We are 60 per cent funded by the ministry so we have to raise 40 per cent of our budget," she said. "There are 3,000 people in Sarnia-Lambton living with Alzheimer's or other dementias, that's just those over 65."

The winning ticket will be drawn on January 4, 2024.

The prize cannot be redeemed for cash. The name on the ticket must be a person who's over the age of 18 and resides in Lambton, Kent, Huron, Middlesex or Elgin counties.
