A fairly new cycling organization is hoping a recently released documentary will help spread its message of becoming a healthier and more connected community.
The nuSarnia Foundation released a documentary, A New Path: The Journey Towards A Connected Sarnia, with a focus on becoming a less "car-centric" city. The film, developed in partnership with TMRRW Inc., was screened in mid-May.
Executive Director Tristan Bassett said the film looks at what life in Sarnia used to be like and how residents interacted with each other in the past.
"Then, we go along this journey of how our city has changed and morphed to be where it is now," said Bassett. "We address some of the challenges we face as a community -- and that many communities face across North America and across the globe -- and how we can create more of a sense of social connectivity primarily."
Bassett said the film also discusses ways to create a "healthy and vibrant" city by looking at shared public spaces and how they can be used.
The Sarnia organization officially launched in the fall of 2022, and Bassett said the community support has been overwhelming.
"We've had tons of really great support from neighbours and residents, businesses, and other not-for-profit and community organizations," Bassett said. "I think everybody has been really eager to work collaboratively and do our part to help create the community that I think we all want to see."
Moving forward, Bassett said they will continue to do what they can to create social connections and hold community events.
