The Labour Day long weekend, or unofficial end to summer, can be one of the busiest long weekends in Grand Bend.
Lambton OPP Cst. Jamie Bydeley said if you plan on visiting the Lake Huron resort community over the next couple of days, be sure to be responsible.
"We would like people to come and enjoy the Grand Bend area, but to do so responsibly and safely," said Cst. Bydeley. "Keep in mind that alcohol is not tolerated on the streets and roadways in Grand Bend, as well as the beach or walking paths. The alcohol needs to be kept within licensed establishments or private places such as residences or cottages."
Cst. Bydeley said on the roads, officers will be focused on the 'big four', speeding, distracted driving, improper seat belt use and impaired driving.
"Make sure that people aren't drinking and driving," said Bydeley. "Plan ahead, make sure that you arrange yourself a ride before you start drinking and if you planning to hit the water on the long weekend, to make sure that all your necessary safety equipment is on board your vessel, including appropriately sized life-jackets for all members on board."
Over the Labour Day weekend last year, Lambton OPP laid a total of 81 charges including 43 tickets for speeding, nine for impaired driving and 11 for not wearing a seat belt. Officers also issued 47 warnings for various offences.
Area boaters can also expect to see an increased police presence on area waterways, ensuring boaters are in compliance with vessel regulations.
