Planning will soon begin as the Village of Point Edward considers possible ways to celebrate the municipality's 150th anniversary in 2028.
CAO Jim Burns said a memo will soon be circulated via email and social media to gauge what sort of interest there is in holding such an event.
Other municipalities, such as the Town of Petrolia, started planning their milestone celebrations three to five years in advance, hence Point Edward's early start to preparations.
Burns said part of the planning process will involve looking at what was done for the village's 125th anniversary, ideas that can be redone or revamped.
"There was a history book written about the village at that time and whether that gets updated... that's one of the things that has been discussed," Burns said. "The door's wide open to try many different things if there's interest and lots of volunteers to make things happen."
Burns said so far, some ideas have been voiced, such as a legacy project or a concert similar to Bridge Bash.
"[It's] very preliminary at this point, I think the first step is going out a getting some public input," he said.
Several other items will need to be considered: whether it would be a one-time or multi-day event, who would organize the celebrations, and an appropriate budget.
Deputy Mayor Greg Grimes has suggested establishing a reserve and hiring a planning committee.
"That'll be part of our budget deliberations, which we scheduled for late March," Burns said. "If we put a little bit aside each year, it'll help pay for what's going to happen when the anniversary actually rolls around."
Community groups interested in working together to organize events as part of the celebration are encouraged to reach out to village staff.
