Family Day weekend to have many activities in Petrolia

The Town of Petrolia will once again host its Family Fun Days.

To start the weekend full of activities, a screening of Back to the Future will be shown at Victoria Hall, at 411 Greenfield St., on Friday at 7 p.m.

A few events will be held as a part of the 150th anniversary of Petrolia's incorporation. One of these events will be an open house by the Petrolia Heritage Advisory Committee on Saturday at Victoria Hall.

"This year there's been a big focus on making sure we can get everyone involved. The heritage open house is new and there will be bigger movies," said Director of Parks, Recreation and Facilities Julie Bullock.

This year the snow sculpting contest was Petrolia-themed but with the warmer weather, it's been hard to have.

Bullock said it's not completely cancelled yet.

"The snow sculpting contest is running from February 1 to [the] 19th, so if we have snow between now and the 19th it will certainly happen," she said.

Bullock added that if there is snow, people can take a photo of their sculpture and send it to the town.

The town will also be hosting free sports activities and skating on Sunday. The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 216 will host their monthly family fundraising breakfast from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m.

Additionally, there will also be a family safety open house at the Petrolia and North Enniskillen Fire Department from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Bullock said families enjoy the events that are put on.

"There [are] lots of different opportunities between going to the YMCA and enjoying a swim or some time for the open gym. We always have a good turnout for our free public skating," she said.

A full schedule of Petrolia's family fun events can be found on the town's website.
