CANstruction promises to be 'out of this world'

As the demand skyrockets, the Inn of the Good Shepherd is holding one of its biggest fundraisers this weekend.

CANstruction returns to Lambton Mall for the 11th annual event, with the theme of "Out of This World."

Structures could focus on aliens, spaceships or the solar system.

The 12 teams taking part will transport their cans into the mall Friday night and will build all day Saturday, with judging set for Sunday.

Inn Executive Director Myles Vanni said CANstruction is always a fun spectacle for the public to come and watch.

"It's really an awesome time to come down, watch the teams build, and transform into their structures," said Vanni. "The structures will stay up for a couple of weeks, and on March 19, they will go through the de-can process and bring down all the cans and box them up. They'll go to our foodbank to help stock the shelves there."

Vanni said last year's event brought in 40,000 pounds of food which is about a three week supply for the foodbank.

He said they also collected around $160,000, making it one of the top CANstruction fundraisers on the planet.

"There were about 115 communities from around the world that participated in CANstruction," he said. "We were fourth for the amount of money raised, and fifth for the amount of canned food raised. So, we're well above our average when you consider we could beat communities like Toronto or Denver or Portugal. It's a lot of credit to the caring of this community."

Vanni said one of their teams actually received an international award.

"The Carpenters' Union, their structure, had the most cans of any structure in the 115 communities," he said. "Sarnia really embraces this event and it shows by the results of how we compare globally but also the impact that we have locally."

Vanni said residents can come and vote for their favourite structure up until 'decanning' day.

Donations can be made at each of the structures, and the one with the highest total will receive the people's choice award.

In 2023, the theme was movies.

CF Industries' "You CAN be my wingman anytime" structure took Judge's Favourite.

The Courtright facility also won Rookie of the Year and Best Use of Theme for the Top Gun display.
