Hundreds of students with out of date immunization records suspended

Nearly 400 local elementary students stayed home from school on Tuesday.

Lambton Public Health said it has not yet received updated immunization records or proof of exemption for 390 kids.

That number is down significantly from a week ago, when the health unit was still waiting to hear from 1,117 students.

"Parents or guardians whose children have received suspension orders are encouraged to call Lambton Public Health to report their immunizations or exemptions to have their child removed from the suspension list," said Public Relations Coordinator Shaun Bisson. "If a student still requires necessary ISPA immunizations, they should call their healthcare provider to book an appointment or book one through an LPH community clinic."

He said updating immunization records helps public health prevent and manage outbreaks through community immunity, preventing the transmission of vaccine-preventable diseases and ensuring safe and healthy environments for children in our schools.

Records include immunizations for diphtheria, tetanus, polio, mumps, rubella, measles, meningitis, whooping cough and chicken pox.

Bisson said as of Tuesday, February 27, 640 high school students remained on the suspension list ahead of the March 26 suspension date.
