Inn of the Good Shepherd sets new record for CANstruction

The Executive Director of Sarnia's Inn of the Good Shepherd says this year was the best ever for CANstruction.

Myles Vanni told Sarnia News Today he's thrilled with the results.

"We raised 56,000 pounds of food," said Vanni. "Last year we raised 49,000. That's a full month's supply of food for us, which is great."

He said another $30,000 was raised through sponsorships and the People Choice award.

"That's about a month and a half of purchasing food for us," Vanni said. "So, it was a great event. We're really proud of the way Sarnia-Lambton supports CANstruction. The teams that participate, the sponsors, the judges and the public that comes out [to see the structures]."

"People's Choice raised $10,000 through the voting processes and it was CF Industries [that won], which was the Star Wars Death Star. It was a really popular structure," he added.

CF Industries also captured the Judge's Favourite award for a second year in a row on March 3rd.

Vanni said the structure had about 6,000 cans of food, while a Rubik's Cube display by the Carpenters Union had over 9,000 food items.

"Such a great variety of food. There were canned soups and stews, pastas, cereal, fruit... a really good variety this year that fills all of the shelves, so that people have that dignity of choice when they go through the food bank," said Vanni.

The structures were dismantled earlier this week after being on display at Lambton Mall since the beginning of the month.
