Sarnia's Sumac Lodge now accepting admissions after necessary repairs

The Ministry of Long Term Care says it has lifted its Cease of Admissions order for Sarnia's Sumac Lodge.

The order for the Blackwell Road facility took effect on December 6, 2023 and was "based on the belief that there was a risk of harm to the health or wellbeing of residents of the home or persons who might be admitted as residents."

Extendicare is Sumac Lodge's operations manager, responsible for all services delivered.

In an email to Sarnia News Today, the company said repairs have been made to the damaged walls, baseboards, door frames and drywall plaster.

Plumbing fixtures, damaged patio furniture, and a faulty keypad for the resident spa have been replaced, and new flooring has been installed.

"We acknowledge that it is unacceptable that the repairs were not addressed in a more timely fashion, and we are committed to doing better moving forward," said an Extendicare spokesperson. "We have hired a new Environmental Services Manager and have implemented strong processes to ensure there is swift resolution of any future building issues or repairs."

Extendicare extended its thanks and gratitude to the community for their patience and understanding as they navigated this process.

The company said it will continue to keep residents, families and team members informed through direct communication.

The owner of the 100 licensed bed Sumac Lodge, Revera Canada, announced in the spring of 2023 plans for a new and larger home to be built on a four-acre lot on London Line. Construction is conditional on approvals from the Ministry of Long-Term Care.
