'Bah humbug' Point Edward considers scrapping Christmas in the Village

A report is expected at Point Edward's next Finance and Administration Committee meeting, detailing the possibility of cancelling or changing Christmas in the Village this year.

The matter was brought forward during last week's council meeting after a proposal was discussed at a previous committee meeting on April 9, to scrap the holiday event and instead put the funds toward Canada Day festivities.

Christmas in the Village has been held since 2011.

"Over the past 12 years more than $120,000 has been allocated to Christmas in the Village and there has been little benefit to the Village Business community as a whole and unfortunately, this event has not assisted in revitalizing our downtown core," read the memo.

Mayor Bev Hand expressed disappointment at the thought of getting rid of a Point Edward staple.

"I would be disappointed to see Christmas in the Village be gone but I know what the reasons are because we're not getting support to help with the event from the businesses," she said.

Deputy Mayor Greg Grimes said he thinks the village's Canada Day event has enough activities as it stands and doesn't need additional funding.

"We have enough things there for people to do between the music, the bouncy castles, the food. I think it's a good size and a good formula so I don't think we need to double it up," Grimes said. "I think Christmas in the Village, as Mayor Hand said, it's very unique to the village, it gets people out in winter … I think both have great value."

Suggestions were made during the meeting that if Christmas in the Village were to be cancelled, the funds may be split among other community events and not dedicated to just Canada Day.

The discussion also veered into keeping Christmas in the Village but "reimagining it" to boost community involvement.

"I'd just like to see the community come in a little bit more because I think, part of it was the disappointment that the businesses didn't necessarily all embrace it and maybe [we have to] take a different step," said Councillor Paul Burgess.

Burgess also highlighted how some residents decorate their cul-de-sacs and how that could perhaps be better supported.

Before the matter was referred back to staff, council suggested that an email or memo go out to local businesses.

"I would be interested in knowing what the businesses think. If we put it to them that we're thinking that we may not have it, I'd be interested in knowing what their position is," said Mayor Hand. "It might be worth polling."

The next Finance and Administration Committee meeting is scheduled to take place on May 14.
