Community input sought on housing and homelessness

The Rotary Club of Sarnia will be discussing housing and homelessness during a community update on May 7.

The club will provide updates on what has been in the works with housing over the past year across Sarnia-Lambton, and ideas being worked on to address the situation.

Rotary club member John Degroot said there are a lot of unanswered questions and a lot of community interest.

"A lot of people have suggested solutions and some thoughts but they don't know exactly where to go with it," he said.

Degroot said homelessness is not just an issue in Sarnia-Lambton but in every city.

"It's important that we address the situation and we try to come up with solutions and we educate ourselves and sort of how to go about making some changes," he said.

According to Degroot, the club is hearing a lot of frustration from the community about homelessness.

Different ways that people can help will be discussed during the meeting as well.

He understands that it is frustrating because change can't happen overnight.

"Perhaps with a public forum we can get more information and we can perhaps clear the air a bit, answer some questions and listen to some concerns and maybe once we get those concerns we can divert them to the right direction or take them to heart, because we are working hard," Degroot said.

He also said the Rotary Club can help by advocating and encouraging possible solutions.

"We're definitely aware that it's a federal problem, and it's a provincial problem and it's a municipal problem, it's a county problem. We're doing our best to tie those pieces in together to get everybody talking,"  Degroot said.

The club has met with government officials to discuss what is happening within the community and to offer options on ways to address homelessness.

"It's important to address (housing) and then hopefully with all of the information we get it will get us more equipment in order to move forward," Degroot said.

The public meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the Dante Club on London Road.
