Over 1,500 fish reeled in during BW Anglers Salmon Derby

The Bluewater Anglers' 48th annual Salmon Derby wrapped up on Sunday, May 12 and the unofficial results have been released.

Mark Valiquette of Petrolia reeled in the heaviest salmon, weighing in at 18.42 pounds.

Strathroy's Adam McCullough caught a 19.45 pound lake trout, and Mike Damchuk of Corunna's 6.86 pound walleye led that category.

Sarnia's John Perz had the heaviest trout caught from shore, at 10.44 pounds, while Brady Knight of Petrolia reeled in a  8.58 pound trout from a boat.

Over the course of the ten day event, 1,565 fish were entered into the derby, at Sarnia Bay, Port Franks, and Port Huron.

Money raised through the event goes toward covering the annual hatchery operating expenses.

The 5,000-square-foot facility, located in Point Edward, has the capacity to raise over 150,000 different types of fish including rainbow trout and chinook salmon.

Fish raised in the hatchery are later released into area waterways.
