Sarnia Relay for Life marks 25th anniversary

Sarnia's Relay for Life is celebrating 25 years this June.

Relay for Life spokesperson Tish Taylor said this year's theme is 'Come Spend the Night With Us'.

"(This) is a way for us to reiterate that community aspect and support in that no one is alone in their experience with cancer," she said.

"Whether you are a survivor, or a caregiver, or a family member who has had to watch somebody else go through treatments, all of us are in this together and no one is alone we're all here to support each other," Taylor said.

The family-friendly event will honour and memorialize those impacted by cancer.

"We start the relay with a survivor lap, so we honour all of the people that have dealt with the disease themselves as well the caregivers join, it's really a heartfelt, moving start to our event and then we end it with our luminary lap," said Taylor.

Last year, 172 people attended the event and it's hoped more people show up this year.

"The community portion and the support (Relay for Life) brings for everybody that is experiencing things in relation to cancer, I feel, is a way for us to come together to bring some new and good memories," Taylor said.

She said the goal this year is to raise at least $75,000 to help people through their cancer journey.

The 2024 event will be held on June 8 at the Western Sarnia-Lambton Research Park on Modeland Road from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m.

You can register in advance online or in person the day of the event.
