Southwestern Ontario under heat warning

Hot temperatures are in store for southwestern Ontario this week.

Environment Canada has issued a heat warning as elevated heat and humidity are expected throughout this week.

Daytime highs are expected to reach 29 to 31 degrees Celsius with humidex values reaching 35 to 40 degrees Celsius.

The weather agency is warning of little relief during the overnight hours as lows are only expected to get down to 17 to 20 degrees.

Humidex values overnight could still reach between 25 to 30 degrees.

Environment Canada Meteorologist Gerald Cheng is warning people to refrain from physical activity during the afternoon.

"When noon is approaching and in the afternoon it gets really  uncomfortable so we want to make sure that we avoid those strenuous physical activities," he said.

According to Cheng, for the most part it will be sunny weather but there may be some thunderstorms that could develop.

Cheng is also providing some tips for people to stay cool.

"It's really important to take frequent breaks during this time because it can get uncomfortably hot and it's a health hazard," he said.

"Make sure that our elderly neighbours are doing alright at this time and always (drink) plenty of fluids," Cheng said.

Environment Canada is also warning to watch out for signs of heat illness.

Anyone feeling unwell, fatigue, thirst or headache are being told to move to a cooler environment immediately.
