Deck fire sends one to hospital

One person was taken to hospital to be checked for smoke inhalation after a fire was reported in Sarnia's north end Sunday evening.

Sarnia Fire Rescue Services Public Education Officer Mike Otis said crews were called at 6:15 p.m. about a fire on a deck near the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Murphy Road.

Otis said two residents were already outside when firefighters arrived and one person was taken to hospital.

The cause of the fire has been deemed accidental.

As of Monday afternoon, there was no damage estimate. Otis said the blaze was extinguished quickly and crews prevented the flames from spreading.

In the meantime, Sarnia Fire is reminding residents to properly extinguish and dispose of smoking materials, especially during this time of year when hot and humid conditions are expected.
