Nahmabin named acting chair of Aamjiwnaang band council

Aamjiwnaang First Nation has appointed a new person to chair band council meetings following the resignation of Chief Chris Plain.

The band council says Janelle Nahmabin will serve as acting chair for the next few months.

"Council would like to congratulate Chief Chris Plain on his new position as Deputy Grand Council Chief for the Anishinabek Nation and we look forward to continuing to work with him in his new role," the band council said in a message to First Nation members. "We would also like to say chi-miigwech for the many years of dedication to Aamjiwnaang. The amount of knowledge acquired during his time in leadership with Aamjiwnaang will certainly benefit all communities within Anishinabek Nation."

Nahmabin, an elected councillor, has served as the chair of the Aamjiwnaang Environmental Committee.

She has also been a member of Suncor's Youth Advisory Committee, The Bluewater Community Advisory Panel and Sarnia-Lambton Women's March.

Nahmabin started in her new role working out of the Administration Building on Monday, June 24 after being appointed to the role at the June 17 regular meeting.

Nominations are expected to open this summer for individuals running for the band council's 2024-2026 term.

The current council term ends in October.
