Call to fire department prompts sump pump safety message

The St. Clair Township Fire Department is reminding homeowners to take proper steps in maintaining their sump pumps to prevent fires.

The local service shared a video from the Milton Fire Department Wednesday morning after firefighters were called to a home on Glenesk Crescent in Corunna because of smoke in the basement.

The active incident was reported on social media at 8:30 a.m. but the scene was cleared shortly after 9 a.m.

"It was determined that the smoke was caused by a malfunctioning sump pump," read a Facebook post from the fire department.

No injuries were reported.

The St. Clair Township Fire Department advised residents to check their sump pumps to ensure they were in good working condition, prior to the storm's arrival.

Environment Canada issued a rainfall warning for southwestern Ontario on Tuesday as remnants of Hurricane Beryl were expected Wednesday and Thursday.

The safety video about sump pumps can be found below.
