Excitement builds ahead of sold out Bluewater Triathlon

This weekend's Bluewater Triathlon and Duathlon is going to be the largest in its 41-year history.

The popular event has sold out, with 350 people ready to race on Saturday in Bright's Grove.

Race Director Haley Walker is thrilled with the event's popularity, as there are at least 45 people on the waitlist.

She notes Sarnia-Lambton is an incredibly active community.

"Through the summer you have the Boys Home Run, the Bluewater Triathlon and the Granfondo, which I believe has sold out with 1,000 athletes," said Walker. "Obviously I'm a big part of our active community, I'm always running or biking or swimming, and there are just hundreds of people that I see exercising every time I go out."

Walker said they have about 90 volunteers helping out, mostly from St. John in the Wilderness Anglican Church.

"The church has been a critical part of running the triathlon for about 30 of the 41 years that it's been in existence," she said. "The event is known for its food, so we have all of the church ladies prepare sandwiches, butter tarts, cookies, hot dogs and watermelon. We're very famous for our post-race feast. There are also volunteers who hand out water, and stand on street corners. We've got about 18 kayakers out this year making sure that the swimmers are safe in the water. The Bicycle Shop in Sarnia is going to be circling around the bike course to do any repairs that need to be done."

The adult race will start at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 20, and will consist of an Olympic triathlon, Olympic duathlon, Olympic relay triathlon and duathlon, sprint triathlon and duathlon, and aquabike.

It will kick off from Bright's Grove Public School and will stretch across the grove and Camlachie, depending on the course.

The Ironkid Triathlon will take place on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Kids between the ages of four to 14 will race through the streets of Bright's Grove.
