Library's used book sale to feature mostly adult titles

Avid readers could get quite the bargain by visiting the Wyoming Fairgrounds for Lambton County Library's annual Used Book Sale.

The sale will be held on Wednesday, July 24 from 1 p.m. until 8 p.m., or while supplies last.

Aside from books, the sale will include audiobooks and DVDs that have been discarded from the library system because of age, low circulation, wear, and other factors.

Technical Services Supervisor Brian Bowley said this year's sale will feature mostly adult titles of all genres from authors such as John Grisham, Danielle Steel, and James Patterson.

"When a book is released, we purchase extra copies to meet demand, and then after the initial demand has weaned, we call those books in to save space out in the branches," Bowley said. "It's a good assortment of hardcover fiction from the last two or three years."

Items are priced at $1 for adult titles and $0.50 for children’s titles. Alternatively, shoppers can fill a standard-sized shopping bag for $5, with a limit of six bags per person.

Proceeds will support the library's operating costs.

Bowley said there were about 700 shoppers last year, whereas there were just over 1,500 attendees two years ago when COVID-19 restrictions were lifted.

He said it's tough to predict how each sale will go.

"We've had some sales where there are tons of people lined up waiting to come in right at the start," said Bowley. "Then there are other times where it's a more steady flow throughout the day. But we've had situations where a lot of books were sold very quickly."

Bowley encourages shoppers to check the library's social media or website before going to the fairgrounds in case they close earlier than anticipated.
