Stuff the Studio for the Inn of the Good Shepherd

You're invited to help us 'Stuff the Studio'.

The new initiative with Blackburn Media, Lambton College, and the Inn of the Good Shepherd is to make sure local students have the supplies they need for a successful school year.

The idea is the brainchild of COOL 106.3 morning announcer Ben Maddigan.

He said needed supplies include backpacks, lunch bags, reusable water bottles, pens, pencils and binders.

"I was always fortunate enough myself to have back to school supplies when I needed them, so I'd like to have an opportunity to give back to those families that might have some financial barriers and I just thought this would be a great way to go about doing it," said Maddigan.

Inn Executive Director Myles Vanni said on average, they distribute between 800 and 900 backpacks to elementary and secondary students every year.

"We all know if you've got kids how expensive kids are when it's time to go back to school," said Vanni. "So many of the families we help, they're struggling. Many are managing week to week, but when you get times of the year like this, back to school, winter coats, Christmas, it places an extra burden on those families. So, we just really try to help smooth out that bumpy road and if we can help them with backpacks then they're not using their food money, rent or hydro money for back to school."

Vanni said Manley's Basics in Point Edward has grade specific Back to School Kits already assembled for residents to purchase and donate.

There will be a mobile studio set up to accept donations for the Inn on Wednesday.

"It's taking place on August 14 right here at our station at 1415 London Road, and it's going to be kicking off first thing in the morning, both morning shows on COOL 106.3 and 99.9 The Fox are actually going to be broadcasting out front so we can greet people as they come in," said Maddigan.

There's also a barbecue from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m., along with the chance to win some prizes.
