Man arrested in assault with hatchet and golf club

One man was arrested and charged following an assault on Tuesday in Sarnia.

Police said a 44-year-old male victim was asleep at an encampment in the Indian Road and Exmouth Street area when he was awakened by another man accusing him of stealing drugs.

The suspect then allegedly struck him in the face and ribs with a hatchet, before grabbing a golf club and hitting the victim over the head.

Police said the victim suffered significant bruising to his head and face.

When police arrived they located the victim who had now armed himself with a different hatchet and a crowbar for protection.

Police said he complied with police direction to disarm and later refused medical treatment.

The 41-year-old suspect was quickly located, arrested and held for bail.

Police said he has been charged with assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, failure to comply with a release order and remanded into custody.

Two men arrested in Tashmoo Ave. standoff

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
