INEOS Styrolution reported above normal benzene emissions at its Tashmoo Avenue site Wednesday morning.
Through a notification by Sarnia-Lambton Alerts, INEOS notified the community as a proactive precaution that hourly on-site benzene emissions have been detected above 0.021 parts per million (ppm).
The company said monitoring data is being verified and the source of elevated emissions is being actively investigated.
It said the notification is preemptive and no adverse effects are anticipated.
Should there be an abnormal operating condition at the site, INEOS said emissions reduction efforts will be identified and implemented.
At this time, no community action is required, however additional notifications may occur.
INEOS adds the plastics plant is not the only source of benzene in the area.
